What is a futon

Japanese Futon Mattresses— not a sofa bed

A futon (布団) is a traditional Japanese floor mattress approximately 10 cm thick, made from natural materials, with no frame of any kind. It is laid on a tatami mat or hardwood floor at night and folded away each morning.

This is not the fold-out metal-frame sofa bed sometimes sold under the same name. A proper Japanese futon contains no metal, no synthetic fill, and is not designed to be used as seating.
"Zentai has been making Japanese futons in Australia since 1981 — over 44 years of continuous production in Byron Bay."
Traditional Cotton
10 cm
Compressed natural cotton layers. Firm, breathable, classic shikibuton. Ideal for tatami mat use and floor sleeping.
Cotton & Wool
10 cm
Cotton core with Australian wool layer on top. Better temperature regulation and moisture wicking for cooler climates.
Premium Foam Core
18 cm
High-density foam base with cotton top. More height for those transitioning from a conventional mattress.
Zentai futons are made to order in our Byron Bay workshop. Natural materials only — no synthetic fill, no off-gassing, no compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Japanese futon is a traditional floor mattress — not a sofa bed. It is approximately 10 cm thick, made from natural cotton or wool, has no metal frame, and is designed to be laid on a tatami mat or hardwood floor and folded away during the day. It is entirely different to the fold-out metal-frame sofa beds sometimes marketed as "futons" in Australia.

Traditional Japanese futons are 10 cm thick — this is the authentic dimension. Zentai's Cotton and Cotton & Wool models are both 10 cm. The Premium Foam Core is 18 cm for those who prefer more height off the floor.

Zentai futons are available in Single (91 × 188 cm), Double (137 × 188 cm), Queen (153 × 203 cm), and King (183 × 203 cm). For tatami mat use, match the futon size to your tatami layout.

Yes — every Zentai futon is made to order by hand in our Byron Bay workshop in NSW. We have been making Japanese futons in Australia since 1981, over 44 years of continuous production.

The Cotton Core futon uses compressed natural cotton — firm and breathable, the classic shikibuton. The Cotton & Wool option adds a layer of natural Australian wool on top of the cotton core. Wool regulates temperature year-round, wicks moisture away from the body, and is naturally anti-microbial. It suits cooler climates or people who sleep warm.

Air daily by folding upright for 30 minutes. Rotate and flip weekly. Sun periodically on a dry day. The removable cotton cover is machine washable on cool/gentle. Do not machine wash the fill — spot clean with a damp cloth and mild natural soap only.
