Traditional All Cotton Futon 10cm

The Traditional Plus Futon is our premium all cotton futon. It is constructed with 100% unprocessed A-grade Australian cotton, covered with an organic cotton/viscose blend fabric. The Traditional Plus futon is suitable for use directly on the floor, on top of Japanese tatami matting. Traditional all cotton Futon Plus : an optional layer of 100% Australian carded wool can be added to both sides of your futon to aid in insulating the internal cotton padding from environmental & user moisture, as well as softening the sleeping surface further. Futons are covered in Organic Cotton & Viscose blend woven fabric ( Viscose is a manufactured regenerated, plant derived cellulose fibre from wood pulp (from trees like beech, pine, or eucalyptus ). Our Traditional Plus Futons are hand made here in Byron Bay using our unique method of manufacturing that guarantees you will have the finest luxury futon with a superior quality of workmanship. We use the patented ‘T-tufting’ system ( not strings ). Our futons are hand tufted using European made plastic-top mattress T tufts (tuft size W 18mm x H 4mm x D 3mm). Extra tufting ensures consistency and longevity. Our traditional futons have an internal lining to prevent cotton from shifting or lumping — for more about the quality workmanship of our futons please review our FAQ page. This firm, thin mattress is not suitable for use on a slatted bed base. For a slatted bed base please select one of our Foam Core Futon mattresses or use 2 traditional futons (one on top of the other) to create extra depth & cushioning. Zentai Living has perfected the manufacturing of futons since 1981.

Maintenance:

Futon is a natural fiber mattress which requires high maintenance - regular turning, weekly sunning and airing (for a couple of hours) in direct sunlight. Sunning will dry out any moisture, re-fluff the cotton fibers to a degree, and refresh your futon. Weekly flipping and rotating is also recommended to achieve even compression. Futons used directly on the floor or tatami will need extra care to prevent unwanted moisture build up underneath the mattress.

Futon’s main component is carded cotton which naturally “compacts and compresses”. Natural cotton has no memory and doesn’t spring back. After regular use (or a break-in period of 6 to 8 weeks ) you will notice the development of a body signature in your futon - this is a normal occurrence and indicates that the cotton layers are conforming to the contours of your body. Cotton will settle / compress about 50% of its original thickness and will get firmer with age.

All Zentai futons are covered by a 24 month warranty.

Do I need to use a mattress protector on my futon mattress?

Yes, we recommend that you always use a Natural Cotton or Wool type mattress protector on your futon mattress. This will absorb any body moisture and, therefore, extend the life of your mattress. The mattress protector can be washed regularly, ensuring a healthier sleep. Our Bambi Cottina 100% Cotton Mattress Protector is the perfect choice. Note: Tatami mats are not included with futons. Caring for Your Zentai Futon

Simple, time-honoured care keeps your futon fresh, supportive, and mould-free for years.

⚠ Suitable Surfaces

Not recommended for direct, permanent placement on polished wooden floors, tiles, or polished concrete — without airflow underneath, moisture has nowhere to go. Carpet is fine in a clean, dry environment, provided it isn’t old or worn.

For best results, we recommend a Tatami mat base — its natural straw construction (5.5cm thick) provides excellent aeration and insulation, though it isn’t guaranteed against heavy environmental moisture and needs its own periodic care. A slatted bed base or 3D mesh underlay are also good options, giving the underside of the futon room to breathe.

As the futon sits close to the floor, ventilation depends on your specific environment — please assess your space for dryness and airflow before use, and monitor regularly, especially in the cooler months when condensation is more likely.

Everyday Care

  • Sun it regularly — this is the single most important habit for a futon. Every 2–4 weeks (more often in humid weather), take the futon outside and air it in direct sunlight for a few hours. This is traditional Japanese futon care (hoshibuton) and is essential for keeping the cotton fresh and free of moisture and dust mites.
  • Flip and rotate each time you sun it — alternate which side faces up and swap end to end for even wear and consistent loft.
  • Air it out indoors on non-sunning days by folding it back or standing it up against a wall for an hour or two each morning, rather than making the bed immediately.
  • Use a breathable mattress protector against spills, stains, and everyday body moisture.
  • Spot clean only — a damp cloth and mild soap handles the occasional mark. Futons should never be machine washed or fully submerged.
  • Keep your room ventilated, particularly in humid weather — a dehumidifier is a great tool for maintaining a consistently dry sleeping environment.
  • Vacuum periodically with an upholstery attachment to lift dust and refresh the surface between sunning sessions.

Roll (don’t drag or fold sharply along one crease repeatedly) when moving or storing your futon, and good airflow keeps it mould-free — this isn’t covered under warranty, but it’s easily avoided with regular sunning and rotation.

Unboxing Your Zentai Futon

Fresh out of the packaging, your futon will look firmly compressed and may feel flatter and firmer than expected — this is completely normal and simply the result of tight rolling and compression for shipping.

Unroll it fully and leave it to air out and loft up for several hours (ideally a full day) before making the bed. Give it a light shake and a few gentle pats or an initial sunning session to help the cotton and foam fully decompress and reach its proper thickness and softness.

    Excellent product

Well made and comfortable to sleep on. Quick delivery.

  2. Very well made

Mattress is very well made and a pleasure to sleep on.

  3. It feels comfortable on this mattress. Can feel the difference.

  4. Great Futon

My futon is for when I need an extra mattress and its perfect. Easy to store, comfortable and very well made.

  5. Sleeping like a baby

Not those babies that wake up and cry. But the kind that is cuddled in their nest. Great sleep. Refreshing wake up. Positive day. Can’t ask for more.

  6. 5/5 Not Sure why we didn't do this sooner

We got this futon and a tatami, and I got the luxury foam & cotton futon and the single sizes both fit on our king bed frame so we can sleep side by side. We are so grateful we tried these futons; we've both been getting the best sleep ever. Waking up refreshed, sleeping deeper, less aches, and better posture.

Myself in particular was hesitant as I'e always slept with a normal mattress (hence why I chose the foam). I didn't even realise I was waking up aching before! It took a few days to get used to sleeping on the new futon, but now I don't think we'd ever go back!¶ So grateful for such a high quality product that is made with Australian cotton. You can really feel the care. Both my Husband (M 29), and myself (F28), are very happy with our purchase! Even caring for the mattresses and putting them in the sun brings me joy.

  7. Traditional Plus Futon All Australian Cotton - 10 cm

  8. Quality Product | Professional and Helpful Staff

  9. Excellent relative to other Au made futons; Avg. relative to Japan made futons.

Cotton batting is too uniformly distributed, so under compression produces a well in the centre that can feel like sleeping on a slope when lying near the edge. No different than any other foam mattress but has appeared rather early.

  10. Money well spent

Absolutely love the all cotton futon, best sleep I’ve had in years and my back issues are slowly but surely resolving.

    Don’t hesitate, money well spent!
