A latex mattress topper is a layer of natural latex — typically 5cm to 10cm thick — that sits on top of your existing mattress and is held in place by your fitted sheet. It changes the feel of your sleep surface immediately, adding cushioning, pressure relief, and airflow that your current mattress may lack.
Unlike foam toppers or pillow-top additions, a natural latex topper is made from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree. It springs back immediately when you move, breathes naturally, and carries no synthetic chemicals or off-gassing. Done right, a quality latex topper will outlast several generations of conventional foam alternatives.
At Zentai Living, our latex mattress toppers are made from 100% natural latex — the same material used in our organic latex mattresses, which we have been handcrafting in Byron Bay since 1981.
Natural latex conforms to the contours of your body — relieving pressure at the shoulders, hips, and lower back — while still providing enough support to keep your spine aligned. The result is a sleeping surface that reduces the tension points that can cause you to toss and turn through the night.
This is particularly useful if your current mattress is on the firmer side. A soft or medium latex topper adds a comfort layer without undermining the foundational support your mattress provides.
The open-cell structure of natural latex allows air to circulate as you sleep. Compare this to synthetic foam or memory foam toppers, which trap body heat — a real problem in Queensland, NSW, and Western Australian summers.
No gel infusions needed. No fancy covers to compensate. Natural latex is cool by design.
Unbox a synthetic foam topper and the smell tells you something is being released into the air. Natural latex has no VOCs to emit. Our latex toppers are independently tested and free from harmful chemical emissions — you can sleep on them from the first night.
Synthetic foam compresses over time. The indentations you see in an older foam topper are the cells collapsing under repeated pressure. Natural latex cells rebound — every time, for years. A quality natural latex topper should last 8 to 12 years with normal use, significantly longer than foam alternatives.
Your mattress is too firm. A soft or medium latex topper is the most cost-effective way to add cushioning without replacing an otherwise sound mattress.
You sleep hot. If you’re waking up warm, a breathable latex topper directly addresses the issue — unlike cooling mattress pads, which manage symptoms rather than causes.
You have a partner with different firmness preferences. A topper can be split — one side soft, one side medium or firm — on Queen, King, and Super King sizes.
You want to try natural latex before committing to a full mattress. A latex topper lets you experience the feel of sleeping on natural latex at a lower price point. Many customers who start with a topper go on to purchase a full organic latex mattress when it’s time to replace their existing one.
Your current mattress is in good structural condition. A topper enhances a mattress that still has sound support. If the base mattress is sagging or has lost its structural integrity, a topper will not fix the underlying problem — that’s when a full replacement makes more sense.
| Thickness | Best For |
|---|---|
| 5cm | Adding mild softness to a firm mattress; lighter body weight |
| 7cm | The most versatile option — balances cushioning and support |
| 10cm | Significant feel change; heavier body weight; mattress that is very firm |
A thicker topper changes the feel of the mattress more dramatically. If you’re unsure, 7cm is the right starting point for most sleepers.
| Firmness | Best For |
|---|---|
| Soft | Side sleepers; pressure relief at shoulder and hip |
| Medium | Side and back sleepers; the most popular choice |
| Firm | Back and stomach sleepers; those who find medium toppers too soft over time |
Our latex mattress toppers are available in all standard Australian sizes:
| Size | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Single | 92 × 188 cm |
| King Single | 107 × 203 cm |
| Double | 138 × 188 cm |

If you’re comparing topper materials, the same fundamental differences that apply to full mattresses apply here — with the practical context of a topper in mind.
| Natural Latex Topper | Memory Foam Topper | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Springy, instant rebound | Slow compression, body-contouring |
| Temperature | Naturally breathable | Retains heat |
| Off-gassing | None | Common in first days to weeks |
| Durability | 8–12 years | 3–5 years |
| Chemical certifications | ECO Institut, Oeko-Tex available | CertiPUR-US (chemicals only) |
| Motion transfer | Low | Very low |
| Price | Higher upfront | Lower upfront, replaced more frequently |
Memory foam toppers have a genuine advantage in motion isolation and are available at lower entry prices. But for breathability, longevity, and chemical-free credentials, natural latex is the stronger choice — particularly for Australian climates and for buyers who care about what materials they’re sleeping on.

Zentai Living has been making natural latex sleep products by hand in Byron Bay since 1981. Our latex mattress toppers are made from the same 100% natural latex as our full organic latex mattress range — not a cheaper blended material used in some toppers to reduce costs.

How thick should a latex mattress topper be? For most sleepers, 7cm is the most versatile option — it adds meaningful cushioning and pressure relief without dramatically altering the feel of a well-functioning base mattress. Go to 5cm if you want a mild adjustment, or 10cm if your current mattress is very firm or you’re a heavier sleeper.
Will a latex topper make my mattress softer? Yes — a soft or medium latex topper will noticeably soften the feel of a firm mattress. A firm topper adds cushioning while maintaining a supportive feel. The change in feel is more significant with a thicker topper.
How long does a latex mattress topper last? A natural latex topper should last 8 to 12 years with normal use. This is significantly longer than synthetic foam toppers, which typically show compression and loss of resilience after 3 to 5 years.
Do latex toppers sleep cool? Yes. The open-cell structure of natural latex allows airflow, making it one of the cooler topper materials available. This is a meaningful advantage over memory foam toppers, which tend to retain body heat.
Can I use a latex topper on any mattress? Yes — a latex topper works on any mattress type, including spring, foam, hybrid, and existing latex mattresses. The key requirement is that the base mattress still has sound structural support. If your mattress is sagging significantly, a topper will conform to the sag rather than correcting it — in that case, a full mattress replacement is the better solution.
Is your latex topper the same material as your mattresses? Yes. Our latex mattress toppers use the same 100% natural Dunlop latex as our full organic latex mattresses. We don’t use blended or lower-grade latex in our toppers to reduce costs. This is also why our customers who start with a topper often come back for a full mattress — the material is identical.
Do you ship latex toppers Australia-wide? Yes. Free delivery across Australia. [INSERT: lead time and delivery details]
