There are two ways to arrange Tatami mats: the “auspicious” and the “inauspicious” tatami arrangement. Nowadays the inauspicious arrangement, where the joints form a ‘+’, is said to bring bad fortune, so the auspicious tatami arrangement is preferred, where no four corners of any full-size mats touch.
